Matrix Coding Decoding

Coding Decoding:  To keep the transaction secure the message that is being sent is first codes and then sent. At the receiving end the message is decoded before it is read.  Thus for sending secret messages from one place to another, especially in Defence Service, coding is used. The codes are based on various principles or patterns such that the message can be easily be deciphered at the other end. Now-a-days, in certain competitive examinations, such questions are given to judge the candidates intelligence and mental ability.

Matrix Coding Decoding:  Matrix is a set of elements which are written in terms of rows and columns. Matrix coding is a method to represent the letters of English alphabet by two digits.the first digit represents row and the second digit represents column.

The questions based on matrix coding consist of two matrices i.e. Matrix I and Matrix II. Matrix I has five columns and five rows marked from 0 to 4. Five letters appear in each column and row but different in order. Matrix II has five columns and five rows marked from 5 to 9. Five letters appear in different order in each column and row.

Candidates are required to find the assigned number to the letters of given word from the given matrices and select the group of numbers which accompanies the letter in the right format. As you can see in the matrix I shown in Fig M can be represented as 14, 21 and so on. In 14 1 signifies the row and 4 signifies the column.

Directions: In each of the following  questions, a word is represented by only set of numbers as given in any one of the alternatives. The sets of numbers given in the alternatives are represented by  two classes of alphabets as in the two given matrices. The columns and rows of Matrix I are numbered from 0 to 4 and those of Matrix II from 5 to 9. A letter from these matrices can be represented first by its row and then the column number e.g. in the matrices given below, M can be represented by 14, 21, etc,; O can be represented by 20, 32, etc. Similarly you have to identify  the correct set for the word given in each question.

Illustration: Identify the option which hsa the set of correct code for the word  MOST

A.. 40, 44, 22, 89                         B. 33, 20, 11, 79                   C.  21, 00, 03, 88                  D.  02, 13, 34, 56

Answer: D

Solution: Here we are supposed to find the set of codes representing the word MOST. First we will find all the codes for the Alphabets in the word. So we see that M, O, S is available in Matrix I and T is in Matrix II.

Form Matrix I, M can be coded as 02, 14, 21, 33, 40.

Form Matrix I, O can be coded as 01, 13, 20, 32, 44

Form Matrix I, S can be coded as 03, 10, 22  34, 41

Form Matrix II, T can be coded as 56, 68, 75, 87, 99

We see that in option D has the correct set of codes as we see that code for M is 02, code for O is13, code for S is 34, and code for T is 56

Illustration: Identify the option which hsa the set of correct code for the word  ROAD

A. 42, 32, 79, 58                         23, 32, 98, 99                  C. 11, 13, 67, 69                  D. 04, 20, 55, 78

Answer: C

Solution: Here we are supposed to find the set of codes representing the word ROAD. First we will find all the codes for the Alphabets in the word. So we see that R, O, is available in Matrix I and A, D is in Matrix II.

Form Matrix I, R can be coded as 04, 11, 23, 30, 42.

Form Matrix I, O can be coded as 01, 13, 20, 32, 44

Form Matrix II, A can be coded as 55, 67, 79  86, 98

Form Matrix II, D can be coded as 57, 69, 76, 88, 95

We see that in option C has the correct set of codes as we see that code for R is 11, code for O is13, code for A is 67, and code for D is 69
